Lady Pirates heading to district in 4th

February 2, 2023

ROSALIA–With the final two games of the season to play, the Lady Pirates have locked down fourth place and have a date at Yakama Tribal Wednesday, February 8 at 6 p.m. in the first round of District play. The girls face Gar-Pal tonight on Senior Night then visit Touchet Saturday to round out the regular season.

Last weekend, the Lady Bucs split their games against Colton and Tekoa-Rosalia, dropping the Colton game 63-31 but hammering T-R 58-11.

The team is 8-5 in Southeast 1B play, 8-7 overall.

The lop-sided score against Colton did not reflect how well the Lady Pirates played, said Head Coach Tai Bye.

"I am so proud of our performance tonight, especially on defense," Bye commented. "We played two strong quarters in the first half, but when Herres got her third foul, we struggled on offense and we then gave up one too many threes.

"We fought back hard in the second half but again gave up too many threes, and we couldn't keep up offensively regardless of our chipping away slowly," she said.

Herres played a "tough" game, Bye said, scoring 10 and rebounding 11, plus contributing as the floor leader. Haliee Brewer "played the game of her life," Bye added, finishing with 10 points and 10 boards.

Saturday's visit to Tekoa-Rosalia was "a great team win," Bye said.

"Everyone contributed well and played hard," she noted. "Our focus was on assists because we've been struggling to finish those shots, but we improved tremendously in that area as well as our rebounds, finishing with 47 team boards."

Herres was again a factor for the Lady Pirates, scoring a game-high 13 points, four rebounds, assists and steals. Kendall Dixon was tough in the paint with 11 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Brewer had another excellent night, scoring 10 points, rebounding seven and swiping two.
