Curtis Winona pins his way to third in State

Junior Pomeroy Wrestler counts pins in all five wins

Curtis Winona is proclaimed the victor over opponent Forks Spartan Nate Dahlgren, the fifth of five pins Winona executed on his adversaries to finish in third place at the Mat Classic XXXVI last weekend in Tacoma.

TACOMA–Pirate wrestler Curtis Winona wrestled his way through the WIAA Mat Classic XXXIV consolation bracket and did it in a rare manner: pinning his opponent in each of his five wins here last weekend. Winona's solitary loss by fall was in his second bout to the eventual state champion, Conan Northwind of Granger.

Pirate wrestler Curtis Winona and Brock Gustaveson of Davenport met after both had first-round wins then got bumped to the consolation round, where they met in their second bout in that side of the bracket. Here Winona executes a take down and he went on to pin Gustaveson at 3:38.

"Curtis turned out his best wrestling of the season," commented Head Coach Mat Slaybaugh., "He looked dominant in his five wins, finishing each one with a pin.

Winona pinned opponent Evan Kunkel, a junior from Napavine, at 5:37 to advance and face Northwind, who had a bye in the first round.

Northwind won by fall at :48, sending the Pirate grappler into the consolation bracket where he took on Cody Strozyk of Willapa Valley, a sophomore. Winona pinned him at 3:52 to advance and wrestle Brock Gustaveson, a freshman of Davenport. Winning by fall at 3:38, Winona then defeated senior Jay Crow of Winlock, whom he pinned at 4:27.


That win put Winona in the third-place bout and he won by fall at 4:54 over Nate Dahlgren of Forks, a junior.
