Lady Pirates off to a rough start

POMEROY–The Liberty Lady Lancers made quick work of the Lady Pirates in the season opener, and the local nine rebounded with more hits and runs in the night cap, but still was behind after six innings. Liberty downed Pomeroy 19-0 in the first game and 25-12 in the second game.

Prairie is scheduled for a visiting double header March 21, and travels to Sunnyside Christian on Saturday. Dayton-Waitsburg visits March 28 as does Liberty Christian on March 31.

"The season opener game was a good one," commented Head Coach Lexi Beale. "The team has lots to learn and build from as the season goes on.

Highlights from the opening double header was a great catch by Maria Altube in center field, and KayLee Schmidt hitting a triple in the five-inning second game, Beale said. "Molly Warren pitched great in the second game," she said.

"The ladies ran bases well and got some steals," Beale added. "We have a young team with lots to build on but we're looking forward to a great season."

Liberty jumped to a 3-0 lead with runs in the bottom of the first, piled on nine more runs in the second and seven more in the third, on three hits and all while holding the Lady Buccaneers to goose eggs.

In the second game, the Lady Pirates weren't as daunted by Liberty's eight-run first inning, scoring five in the second and six in the third.

But the Lady Lancers counted six runs in the top of the third to lead 14-11 after three innings, then added 11 more runs in the last three innings for the 25-12 victory.
