Sixth-place finisher Brady Bott, left, Chase Caruso, wearing a red-ribboned, second-place medal, and Head Coach Al Damron bask in the glow of successful performances at the State Golf Match last week in Tumwater.

TUMWATER–Pirate golfers Chase Caruso and Brady Bott springboarded off their D7/D9 District Championships for high placements at the 1B/2B Golf Championships here May 23-24, Caruso repeating as the second-best woman golfer in the state 1B/2B ranks, and Brady Bott barely out of higher placings by a few strokes for a sixth-place finish.

Caruso golfed a 79 on both days, but Sound Christian's Makenna Kelpman edged ahead of her by two strokes the first day and four the second to make a six-stroke difference in their scores.

Bott, this year rebounding from a broken wrist last year, shot a respectable 78 on the first day, 81 on the second, to land in sixth place.

"The fact that Chase and Brady were both individual district champions is huge," commented Head Coach Al Damron. "I'm not sure when this last happened, but not in my five years of coaching. Then to do so well at state was awesome."

Damron said Caruso "was her usual steady self both days."

Bott worked through a couple "tough starts," Damron said, "but finished great."

"Also, it's a neat fact is that four of the top 10 girls are from our district," Damron added. "The concern is that, aside from Chase, the other three will play next year, so our younger girls have their work cut out for them.

"Personally, I couldn't be happier with our season," Damron said. "All of our kids set new personal bests at one time or another. I'm looking forward to next year."
