Pomeroy Conservation District has hired Mike Denny as its new Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) Cluster Coordinator. Mike comes to PCD from Walla Walla Conservation District, where he served as Riparian Habitat Coordinator as well as the Outreach and Education co-chair. In Garfield County, Mike will serve as the CREP cluster coordinator for four Conservation Districts: Pomeroy CD (Garfield County), Palouse CD (Pullman), Palouse-Rock Lake CD (St John) and Whitman CD (Colfax).

Brian Long of Pomeroy, the Washington State FFA vice president, and state president Jake Yancey, took pictures with national FFA leaders during dedication ceremonies July 20 at the new National FFA Center in Indianapolis, Ind. The pair was among over 100 state FFA officers who attended the dedication then moved on to the State President's Conference in Washington, D.C.

One of the Japanese students who visited Pomeroy is again here, spending the summer. Toshiyuki Matsomoto, from Yamate High School in Yokohama, Japan, will be the guest of the Thomas Gallagher family for about a month. He became friends with Mary Pat and Colleen while visiting here before, and wanted to visit Pomeroy again. Toshiyuki would also like to stay here in the fall and go to school if he can find a student who will exchange with him, Mrs. Gallagher said. The local student would stay with the Matsomoto family.

As the Bahamian workers–100 strong–climbed into trucks and left for Spokane Tuesday night to take the train to their new station in Minnesota-their spokesman left a message to "the many good friends in Pomeroy." Their thank-you note read: "Dear friends, we fain to say how do you do? But our hearts ache us to say adue. We hope our desperation will not be forever. We hope that we shall meet again here in Pomeroy, adue friends. We remain your dear friends, the Bahamian workers." About 75 workers will remain in Pomeroy for approximately two weeks until the pea harvest is finished.

The combine team of E.C. Lewis and Ed Ruchert ran away last Friday evening, upsetting the machine and doing considerable damage, besides the loss of four days, which was necessary to make repairs. The team had just been pulled out of the field to unhook, when one horse took fright at a man who was handling sacks and started the runaway. The eight leaders broke loose. The rest of the horses, after running a short distance, pulled up.

The only new man who went into the city council Tuesday evening was Lawyer Gose who succeeds Lawyer Cosgrove as Mayor. Mr. Cosgrove has proven himself very diligent in the discharge of his official duties, and retires from the mayor's office with the respect and good will of the people generally.
