Ten Years Ago

A tradition spanning two generations and over three decades will come to an end when Vickie Shelton closes the doors of The Victorian Rose & Collectibles for the final time at the end of August. Vickie bought The Flower Basket in June, 1994, from her mother Sue Deveney, who had purchased the shop in 1982. "Now, due to some health issues, I need to slow down and take care of myself," Vickie said of her decision to close the shop.

Twenty Five Years Ago

August 26, 1998

Jon Van Vogt played the piano during Sunday's Gospel music recording session at Pataha Flour Mill, which Van Vogt recently purchased. Proceeds from the sale of videotape and audio CDs of the community songfest will be used to refurbish and modernize the mill and make it into a visitor attraction. About 250 residents lent their musical and vocal support to the project and posed for the CD cover photo outside the mill.

Seventy Five Years Ago

August 28, 1948

Plans to build a new $100,000 school and convent for Holy Rosary Church parish were announced Sunday at services by Father D. Brendan O'Connor, pastor. Approval of the construction plans has been received from the Rt. Rev. Charles D. White, D.D. Bishop of Spokane Diocese. The parochial school was started here in 1886 by Father Peter Poaps, assisted by Miss Sarah McDonald. Construction of the school was begun in 1886 and formal opening was held in September of that year. Cost of the building was $5,000.

One Hundred Years Ago

August 25, 1923

Horace Sykes, fire prevention engineer, passed through Pomeroy again on Monday, and was surprised to learn there had been no dust explosions in separators operating in Garfield County this season. He said explosions had occurred frequently in Walla Walla county and other points in the wheat district. "Three or four small explosions have been known to occur in one machine in a day's run," Sykes said. "The proper wiring of machines forms the best safeguard against separator fires."

One Hundred Twenty Five Years Ago

August 27, 1898

Peace has been declared and our boys are now speculating on the possibility of soon being mustered out of the service, but from competent authority I learn that it will be some time, possibly three months before we will be enabled to again follow civilian pursuits.-Capt. St George.
