Blue Mountain Artisan Group's Art Center at 745 Main St. has the new "Autumn Colors" show hung. According to art group presidents Mary Flerchinger, "We have new steam punk from Paula Lahti, new fabric art from Jen Witted and a fabulous collection of water colors from Shirley Erlandsen of Spokane Valley. Mary said the center's display has a good assortment of greeting cards of original art work, photography, and craft cards.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

September 2, 1998

Monday was the first day of school for Pomeroy students, and the first day of school ever for kindergarten student Jacob Brenner, who gave his teacher Kelly Knebel an orange when he came into the classroom. This is the first-year teaching in the Pomeroy School District for Mrs. Knebel, who has 24 students in her class.

Fifty Years Ago

August 30, 1973

Lisa Eilene Waldher, a senior at Pomeroy High School, has been notified that she is to be featured in the Seventh Annual Edition of Who's Who Among American High School Students, 1972-73. Miss Waldher, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Waldher of Pomeroy, is active in Future Homemakers of America, Pep Club, drill team, Holy Rosary Catholic Church, National Piano Players Guild, 4-H, Candy Striping and National Honor Society. She received her first seven years of schooling at Holy Rosary Grade School and the remainder at Pomeroy High School.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

September 2, 1948

Lend a hand! That's the cry that went out through the county this week as our Garfield County fair suffers its first growing pains with plans ready to erect an exhibit building for the first time. Cash contributions have been made to the county 4-H and Pomeroy FFA chapter for the construction of a fine 30 foot by 100-foot exhibit building at the fairgrounds east of the city. Dick Brown, Smith-Hughes instructor, Phil Bloom, county agent, and Alva Ruark, fair manager, ask that volunteer labor show up to rush the building to completion.

One Hundred Years Ago

September 1, 1923

James Shawley, who was among the pioneer threshermen of Garfield County, and has had much experience operating both separator and combined harvester, believes the binder will come to be generally used here. He cites many cases this year where bound grain containing much Jim Hill was threshed and saved that could not have been saved either by the header or combine process. The spread of weeds is also held in check by the use of the binder, Mr. Shawley said.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

September 3, 1898

The new telephone system in Pomeroy is now in operation. The newest and up-to-date instruments have been put in, the rate ranging from $1.50 a month upwards. This being a local enterprise no doubt the citizens of Pomeroy will show their appreciation by a liberal patronage. So far 11 instruments have been put in operation.
