Walker Flynn (14), with teammate Trace Roberts (88) leading the sweep, rumbled into the end zone, capping an 18-yard touchdown run in second quarter, his second score of the game.

POMEROY––Pirate football kept the defense guessing as it rebounded from last week's loss with a solid 46-22 win over the Waitsburg Cardinals here Friday.

This Friday's contest is a non-league matchup against the Charlo (Mont.) High School Vikings, a community north of Missoula, Mont.

The Pirates jumped to a sound 20-6 first-quarter lead on touchdown runs by Kyzer Herres, Walker Flynn and Jacob Reisinger. Herres's touchdown was a breakaway 55-yard scamper for six. Flynn swept in from the 23 yard line to Pomeroy second score and a 12-0 lead. Reising punched across the goal line from the four, then Flynn added the two-point PAT for a 20-0 lead. Waitsburg's Lucas VanHoose pulled in a 29-yard pass from Isa Reyes, then Koyen Fortune made the PAT run for a 20-8 first-quarter score.

"The Pirates had six different players score touchdowns and had some clutch defensive plays as well," commented Head Coach Kyle Kimble. "Trace Roberts and Ollie Severs sacked [Waitsburg quarterback] Reyes of number of times in critical situations and Jett Slusser came down with two interceptions in the game as well. Overall, it was a great team win for us."

In the second quarter, scoring was limited to an 18-yard touchdown run by Flynn, giving the Pirates a 26-8 lead at half time.

After Pirate quarterback Jett Slusser found Roberts with a 65-yard scoring pass, Waitsburg put together a mini rally with a pair of touchdowns: Reyes hitting VanHoose for a 39-yard score and the Brenton Segraves punching in from the two, that score followed by a Reyes to VanHoose two-point conversion.

Going into the final period with a 32-22 advantage, the Buccaneer defense stymied the Cards while the offense chalked up a couple more touchdowns to ensure the win. Slusser kept the ball for a 14-yard touchdown run, and with the Reisinger PAT, grew the difference to 40-22. The Pirates capped scoring with a 12-yard run by Severs, solidifying the S.E. 1B 8-man win.
