Pirates slash SJEL Eagles 50-6

LACROSSE–Other than the 6-6 first-quarter tie, the Pirates soon put the game away, going on to a 50-6 win over St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse here Sept. 22. The Pirates are now 2-1 in league, 3-1 overall.

The Pirates travel to Touchet for a 3 p.m. game against the Redhawks this Friday.

"Defensively the Pirates were solid," observed Head Coach Kyle Kimble, "only allowing six points in the game. Jacob Reisinger had two interceptions and Braxton McKeirnan had one as the Pirate secondary held SJEL to 28 yards passing."

Offensively, Jett Slusser scored three touchdowns while rushing for 160 yards and completing 175 yards passing-three touchdowns through the air, Kimble said. Ollie Severs caught two of those touchdown passes and gained 115 yards on receptions to lead all receivers.

"We had a great overall team win," Kimble said.

Colton Ledgerwood's recovered fumble resulted in Pomeroy's first score, a four-yard punch by Walker Flynn.

When the Eagles got the ball, Landen Miller broke a 76-yard ramble for six, and a 6-6 tie when the conversion failed.

Slusser and Flynn alternated carrying the ball on a march to the next score, a one-yard run by Slusser. Braxton McKeirnan carried for the conversion and a 14-6 lead the Pirates never gave up.

Reisinger intercepted an SJEL pass but the Pirates coughed up the ball and the Eagles recovered but they went three and out.

On the SJEL 38, Slusser hit Severs for six and Slusser ran in the PAT for a 22-6 margin.

Braxton McKeirnan intercepted Eagle quarterback Matthew Deford at midfield but SJEL recovered a Pirate fumble to stop the drive after a couple first downs.

The Eagles advanced across midfield before turning the ball over on downs. Slusser and Walker carried the ball then Slusser waltzed in from the two yard line. Add Braxton McKeirnan's PAT and the score is 30-6.

In the second half, Flynn caught a 29-yard Slusser pass for a touchdown and a 36-6 margin.

Reisinger halted another Eagle drive with an interception, and in a few plays, Slusser moved the 37 yards to pay dirt ending with a seven-yard run by the quarterback and a 42-6 lead.

The Buc defense held and the punt was returned by Braxton McKeirnan, and the Pirate offense set up shop, methodically moving the ball across mid field where Slusser hit Severs for a 42-yard touchdown. Vinnie Vecchio ran in the conversion for the 50-6 final score and the running clock made quick work of the fourth quarter.
