Ten Years Ago

November 6, 2013

Travis Johnson, a Pomeroy resident serving in the U.S. Army, was presented a Quilt of Valor by Alice Gwinn at last week Friday's Veteran's Day program at Pomeroy Elementary School. Travis said his main reason for serving, including deployment in the Middle East, was his dedication to family, including his family of loved ones, his community family, and the ties to the family of soldiers he serves with.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

November 4, 1998

Marine Capt. Edwin L. Scoggin, a native of Pomeroy, is currently half-way through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit embarked about the ships of the USS Saipan Amphibious Ready Group. While deployed, Scoggin's unit participated in the multi-national exercise called "Matador Livex '98".

Fifty Years Ago

November 1, 1973

Miss Jeanne Wolf was chosen 1973-74 Garfield County Wheat Queen at the annual contest Saturday night at the high school auditorium. One of four contestants for the title, she was judged on her poise, personality and public speaking ability, according to Mrs. Ray Keatts, chairman. Miss Wolf is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wolf of Pomeroy.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

November 4, 1948

Along with the rest of the nation Wednesday morning, Garfield County sages were recovering from the shock of a clear-cut democratic party majority over the republicans in the presidential election and in most of the senate and house seats in congress. Reeling from the upset win of champion Harry S. Truman were the wise guys, among which were the poll experts, who had predicted such great things for the republicans and Tom Dewey. Farm-bred Harry Truman, closer to the grass roots of America than Dewey, got a surprising cote in normally republican Garfield County.

One Hundred Years Ago

November 3, 1923

The game with Dayton last Friday was one of real thrills. The teams were evenly matched as may be seen by the score, which was 6 to 6 at the end. Both teams failed to kick a goal after their respective touchdowns. Manual Garren made our only touchdown. The girls carried out their duties as police quite successfully. Few who needed it escaped their whack with a hard-wood paddle.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

November 5, 1898

H.W. Wilson of Alpowa, the well-known fruit grower, was in the city yesterday and he was both happy and proud. He had an exhibit of fruits from his big orchard, at the Spokane fair and secured twelve premiums in the awards made by the judges. He secured six premiums on pears, three on peaches and three on apples. On the premiums was for the best specimen of the celebrated Idaho pear. Mr. Wilson ships a large amount of fruit, and a few days ago received an order for two carloads of apples for the Minneapolis markets.
