Pirates slash Bulldogs, Wildcats

Pirate Trace Roberts (42) commanded the inside game in Pomeroy's 72-12 road win over the Dayton Bulldogs both offensively and defensively, finishing with 25 a game-high points.

DAYTON–Trace Roberts and Ollie Severs were the top scorers in Pomeroy's 72-12 win over the young Bulldogs here Saturday, Dec. 9, on the heels of another lop-sided win over Colton, and with a challenging weekend ahead for the 3-1 Pirates.

"We have a couple of tough tests next weekend that will let us know where we stand," commented Head Coach Chris Wolf. The Bucs host Oakesdale on Friday and travel to Palouse Saturday to face the Vikings.

Against Dayton, the Pirates took advantage of the size difference over the young Bulldog squad, Wolf said. "The boys are sharing the ball and doing a good job of finding the mismatches and getting the ball to the correct spot," he said. "The boys are playing extremely hard defensively and contesting every shot."

Roberts led all scoring with 25 and Severs hit seven buckets for 14 points. Jett Slusser dished nine assists and made eight rebounds.

The Buccaneers' defense kept Colton's quarter scoring in single digits on the way to a 75-14 home win.

Severs led the team with 25 points, four rebounds and four steals. Roberts added 14 points, four boards and three assists. Jacob Reisinger played a great game with 11 points and two steals. Slusser led in assists with seven.

"We came out with great intensity in the first half and were able to create turnovers that led to easy baskets," Wolf said. "We defended well the whole game and did a great job of moving the ball."

Waitsburg gave the Pirates a game December 5, but the Bucs slowly pulled away, outscoring the Cardinals by double in the second half.

"We didn't convert around the basket as well as we would have liked but we got great looks and played solidly on defense all game long," Wolf said.

The coach credited the bench for giving the game "a boost of energy."

Severs led with 16 points and five rebounds. Kyzer Herres played a good all-around game and finished with 15 points and five steals. Slusser did a good job of distributing the ball tonight and finished with seven assists. Braxton McKeirnan led us with seven rebounds. Roberts also had a great all-around game with nine points, five rebounds, and three steals.

"Trace is definitely our emotional and defensive leader," Wolf said.
