Winona, Cannon win weight classes at Christmas Tourney

The Pirate Wrestling Team competed well at the Pirate Christmas Tournament held here last Saturday. Both Curtis Winona and Peyton Cannon finished atop their respective brackets and Kole Zimmerman ended the day in third place, Levi Bowen finished in fourth. Pomeroy hosted its annual Christmas Tournament this year with 16 teams in attendance with the Pirates finishing in eighth place with 77 points and two championship medals. Enterprise captured the team championship with 211½ points.

"The Pirate wrestlers gave their best in front of their home crowd," said Head Coach Mat Slaybaugh.

First-place medals went to Curtis Winona and Peyton Cannon, Winona winning out in the 190-lb. class and Cannon finishing the 175-lb. division with a trio of wins to the medal podium.

"Curtis continued his strong senior season," Slaybaugh said, "winning all of his matches by pin. The coaches in attendance also voted Curtis as the Outstanding Wrestler for the Tournament."

Winona drew a bye in the opening round then faced Grant Stevens of Clarkston, winning by fall at 5:08. Next he wrestled Giovanni Aquaro of Potlatch, pinning him at 1:00. In the championship match, he pinned Parker Farmer of Grangeville at 3:14.

Curtis Winona won his three matches to take the number one spot in the 190-lb. division. He was also voted Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament by the coaches.

Cannon took on Victor Whitmore of Waitsburg in the opening match, pinning him at 1:16. He than battled Koyen Fortune of Waitsburg, winning by fall at 4:26 to move into the championship bout against Travis Redburn of Ritzville, pinning him at 4:16. "Cannon has been showing great improvement from week to week," Slaybaugh said, "and was able to put it all together today in his first place finish."

Finishing in third, Zimmerman opened with a loss to Irwin of Enterprise then pinned Newhouse of Clarkston, Gibson of White Swan and McKaig of Union. "Zimmerman had a great day scoring three pins to finish third," Slaybaugh noted.

Levi Bowen's fourth-place finish was via a decision loss to Michel of Wilbur-Creston, a pin of Vantress of Potlatch and the fall loss to Wren of Grangeville. "Bowen ran into some stout competition today but showed good improvement in his technique and was able to make his way to the medal round," the coach said.
