POMEROY–The City Council swore in new members, passed an ordinance creating an availability water and sewer rate, and changed the regular meeting time at their meeting on January 9.

New council members Rachel Herres, Roni Field, John Hirsch and Kurt Tetrick, as well as Mayor Jack Peasley took oaths of office, administered by City Clerk Diane Taylor. The council also created five standing committees-the Finance Committee with Councilmen Jim Harris and Hirsch as members; the Parks and Recreation Committee with Field and Harris; the Planning and Community Development Committee with Herres and Field; the Public Safety Committee with Hirsch and Tetrick; and the Public Works Committee with Tetrick and Herres. These committees will review and advise the council on projects and matters pertaining to their specific fields as they arise. The council also appointed John Hirsch as mayor pro tem.

The council passed Ordinance 937 amending Ordinance 932, the 2024 water and sewer rates established at the end of 2023 to consist of a basic rate and an availability rate. The basic rate is 75% of the rate established in Ordinance 932, along with an availability rate of the remaining 25%. Buildings with active water and sewer will be charged both the basic and availability rate, while buildings with the water and sewer shut off will only be charged the availability rate. The council stated the reasoning for the change was to give the previously approved charge for inactive buildings a name for ease of understanding. The amendment does not adjust the total charge created by Ordinance 932.

The council also passed Ordinance 935, changing their regular meeting time from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the City Hall on the first Tuesday evening of the month after the third day. The date and location of the meeting is unchanged from the previous schedule.

Also passed was Ordinance 936, allowing Mayor Jack Peasley to forego his salary and benefits for the year of 2024. The funds foregone will be used as the City Council sees fit.
