Kiona-Benton's Carlos Alvarez was Pirate wrester Curtis Winona's first opponent at the Battle of the Blues Tournament last weekend. Winona advanced to the championship game, finishing second in a 10-7 decision to College Place's Parker Hodgen.

COLLEGE PLACE–Curtis Winona fought hard in a "back-and-forth" championship round that finished with a 10-7 decision for Winona's opponent and a second-place finish at the Battle of the Blues tournament here last weekend.

Next up for the Pirate wrestling team is the second league meet at Reardan today, January 18. Kittitas Invitational will be Saturday.

"Senior Curtis Winona had another great outing looking dominant in his two victories," said Head Coach Mat Slaybaugh. "He lost a tough back-and-forth finals match to finish second on the day. Curtis has had several tough losses this season in the finals but knows those are the matches that will build him up for success at the end of the season."

Winona, competing in the 190-lb. class, pinned Carlos Alvarez of Ki-Be at 1:24, Damyan Santana of Wa-Hi pinned at 1:30 then lost a 10-7 decision to Parker Hodgen of College Place.

"Levi (Bowen) and Kole (Zimmerman) showed promise in their matches but ultimately were knocked out of the tournament after going 1-2," Slaybaugh said.

Bowen wrestled Masyn Lindsey of Mac-Hi, losing by fall at 3:54. In the consolation bracket, Bowen faced Aaron Mulvaney of Highland pinning his opponent at 1:47 to advance. In the next round, he faced Gustavo Coanales of Warden, losing by fall at 2:34.

Zimmerman (165 lb.) went against Thomas Sievertsen of Wa-Hi in the first round, losing by decision 3-1. He took on Uziel Torres of Ki-Be in the next round, pinning Torres at :56. Zimmerman faced Rufino Gonzalez of Warden, losing by fall at 2:04.
