Pirates drop game to Oakesdale Nighthawks

January 25, 2024

COLTON–The Pirates bounced back from a squeaky-close loss at Oakesdale the night before with a 67-17 trouncing of Colton.

The Buccaneers are in first place in the Southeast B Wheat Division with an 7-1 league mark and 11-2 overall, with Oakesdale in second, Gar-Pal in third and Tekoa-Rosalia in fourth.

"Next week will be a big week for us with Desales and Garfield-Palouse in the schedule," said Head Coach Chris Wolf. "It will be nice to play some home games as we have had 6 of our last 7 on the road."

"Oakesdale took away our interior game and we struggled to find ways to score," Wolf said.

"We missed some shots I feel like we normally make but didn't have our normal ball movement that leads to us getting good looks," he added.

Defensively, Wolf wasn't happy with the Pirates' defense of the three-point line. "We gave up several open shots which they knocked down," Wolf said, finishing 6 of 14 from the arc. "We didn't have a hand up close enough on any of them."

"Oakesdale just out-played and out coached us tonight," he said. "We have spent most of the last month on the road with only one home game since December 19. It will be good to play the majority of our schedule at home to finish up."

In the runaway against Colton, the Bucs started slow but got in the groove in the second quarter and never looked back.

"We got off to a slow start," Wolf said, "but about halfway through the second quarter we found our rhythm and went in a big run."

Ollie Severs led the way with 18 points and six rebounds. Kyzer Herres added 17 points, four rebounds and seven steals. Trace Roberts had 10 points on only seven shot attempts and was very efficient, Wolf noted.
