Eagles hold off fourth-quarter Pirate rally

January 23, 2020

LACROSSE–A big fourth quarter fell just short for the Pomeroy Pirates as they fell to the St. John-Endicott-LaCrosse Eagles 49-44 here Saturday.

The Pirates hosted Dayton-Waitsburg last Tuesday and Oakesdale visits the Pomeroy gym Friday, Jan. 24, for the rematch. Earlier this year, the Nighthawks defeated Pomeroy 66-38 and the Pirates will be looking to avenge that loss. Pomeroy visits Colton on Saturday night for another Southeast B conference game.

Pirate turnovers and missed bunnies added up to the five-point loss. “We had 23 turnovers and missed at least 15 point-blank shots,” said Head Coach Chris Wolf. “Until we clean up the turnovers we are going to struggle to win ball games.”

The Pirates also didn’t get a hand in the face of Ty Harder of SJEL, who drained five three pointers to lead all scorers with 24.

Evan Bartels had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Byron Stallcop had 14 points and 16 rebounds.
