A Teen's Take

October 15, 2020

POMEROY–How do we choose what we want to do with our lives. Are we supposed to make the sacrifices and take the logical route? Are we meant to take the risky route and choose to do what we really want? What do you want to do when you graduate high school? How are we supposed to decide by the time we’re eighteen anyways? These are questions over half of us are unable to answer at this time.

I understand having a few ideas is a good start, but how do we narrow it down to one or even two possibilities so we can set that in stone.

I know we should consider things such as where you want to live and what the necessary salary should be. I also know a career should be in an area you like or are really good at doing. This part of life is hard and we’re only in high school. Even the basic things seem overwhelming to us like how to live on our own after we graduate high school while getting a college or technological education or deciding what job would be best to move us in the right direction.

I think it would be helpful if the educational system could offer life classes that would prepare us for the real world, such as how to budget, pay our own bills, and even change our own tires. What about classes that teach us how to cook or do laundry or even build something useful.

I can see prioritizing algebra over everyday things may be useful to advance in higher education, but what about the basic things we need to know like do our own taxes or even what it is in the first place.

So here we are back to the same question: How did you know what to do with your life?

I hope everyone had a great week and enjoyed the cool weather.
