January 1, 2014

Pomeroy Gun Club's ten week shoot will actually be 11 weeks again this year because the Spokesman Review 8 week contest will begin one week earlier than the Camas Prairie 10 week competition. The Spokesman Review shoot starts Sunday January 5th and the Camas Prairie will begin competition on January 12th.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

December 30, 1998

High winds Saturday and Sunday knocked over utility sheds and blew off shingles around the county but Sheriff Larry Bowles said no major damage was reported. Several residents reported water from the heavy rain coming into basements, the sheriff said. Winds over the weekend in Pomeroy were reported to reach gusts in the low 60 mph and high 50 mph range.

Fifty Years Ago

January 3, 1974

The county sanitary landfill to be constructed 4 ½ miles northeast of Pomeroy will greatly enhance the quality of the environment in Garfield County since it will serve the solid waste requirements of the entire county, for the next 40 or 50 years, according to an Environmental Impact Statement released by the county health department, through county sanitarian Paul Guenther. The landfill will receive refuse that is compacted six days per week. Each day six inches of native earth will be dozed over the new dumpings.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

December 30, 1948

Rocky Star and his famed radio orchestra will be the treat for local dancers and music enthusiasts Saturday, New Year's night at the Maple hall and Jaycees, sponsors of the dance, are making plans to entertain a big crowd. In addition to the orchestra, headline events in Star's floor show will offer a double treat to patrons. Working on the dance for the Jaycees are Larry Brown, Ted Buller, Jim Scott and Vernon Keatts.

One Hundred Years Ago

December 29, 1923

The basketball season will be opened here tonight (Thursday) with a game between the high school team and the alumni, Coach James H. Hart announces. The alumni team will consist for the most part of the young men who are home from different colleges for the holiday vacation. Mr. Hart expect this opening game to be full of interest and very naturally would like to see a good attendance. The alumni team is in no way connected with the town team which has been practicing to play after the holidays, Coach Hart explains.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

December 31, 1898

And now it is reported that the O.R.&N. will make Covello the terminus of the Dayton branch line, and will not build to Delaney. After completing their work as far as Covello the surveyors broke camp and returned to Portland, saying they had no orders to go to Delaney. The supposition now is that the connecting line between the Pomeroy and Dayton "swings" will be confined exclusively to paper.
