Ten Years Ago

After an absence of almost four decades, the Pomeroy Pirate wrestling team claimed the top step of the awards podium of a post-season tournament on Saturday. The Pirates won the Class B East Sub-regional Tournament in Davenport, overcoming 12 other teams in the field. Team members included Kyle Hyer, Taylor Lewis, Adam Herres, Jack Neice, Wyatt Hyer, Clayton King, Steven Wysocki, Mike Wymore, Blaine Reisdorph, Wyatt Jenkins, Havin Heytvelt, Ryan Smith, Austin Reisdorph, Tyler King, coach Ben Slaybaugh and head coach Brian Slaybaugh.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 3, 1999

The Pomeroy Council Knights of Columbus Hoop Shoot free throw contest was held last Wednesday and Thursday with 148 students participating. The format called for each participant taking 15 shots. A 5-shot tie-break was used when needed. Age groups for boys and girls were age 10 and 11, and age 12 through 14.

February 7, 1974

The Garfield County Health Department is now moved to the new location on the grade school playground, 11th and Pataha.Because of children playing we request that those coming to the health department by car please drive along Pataha Street south of the creek and cross the bridge on 11th. When leaving, return by the same route.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

February 3, 1949

Indiana's famed Clark Twins basketball squad, out of Huntington, will appear before Pomeroy fans Thursday, against the Bartlow All-Stars, a Pomeroy independent quintet, in the high school gym. Net proceeds will go to the high school band uniform fund, which is still lacking to completely pay for the uniforms, Frank Hall, principal said. Three pairs of twins make up the team: Robert, Ross, Don, Dale, Joe and Jim Clark are the brothers on the squad. Appearing for the Bartlow All-Stars will be: Ellsworth Bartlow, Whit Bartlow, Dallas Forest, Wesley Fitsimmons, Larry Slater, Hugo Pawlik, Carl Pawlik and Jim Burke.

One Hundred Years Ago

February 2, 1924

The finish and equipment of the new Methodist church will be in in keeping with its massive construction and pleasing architecture, developments indicate. Substantial cushioned chairs have been provided for the auditorium, besides about 200 folding chairs. Back of the altar on the main floor a handsome memorial window has been put in by the community for Rev. F.N. Morton, in appreciation of the valuable services he has rendered, as well as windows furnished by the Gould Sunday school, the home Sunday school, the Ladies' Bible Class, the Busy Bees, and Mr. and Mrs. Archie Holmes.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 4, 1899

Ping-I have almost forgotten the Mormons. Two preachers of that family of saints have been seeking converts in this vicinity. They claim that a plurality of wives is the proper thing. Now, are there any women here that would like to fill the exalted station of a third or fourth wife? Don't all speak at once, please.
